I am interested in our attitudes about the natural world and how those attitudes dictate our interactions with nature. I am also interested in the human capacity for empathy, specifically, I’m curious about what characteristics of others (whether human or nonhuman) elicit empathy. These interests are not independent, and together they inform much of my work, including this series. I was recently invited to view a museum collection of bird specimens, and was at once delighted and horrified - they were so beautiful up close, but it was heartbreaking to see them lifeless on a table. They are both precious objects and disposable living beings. With this work, I ask the viewer to contemplate the value of these animals.
